How to Start a Career in Writing

When launching your career as a writer, you must first learn to write well on topics of interest to the public. Then, after you have developed your finished material, you need to find the best way to market your writing and sell yourself as writer.
First: Improving your writing skills
First, seek out one of the many community colleges that courses in English and Composition both for credit and as continuing education. Taking one of these classes allows you to brush up on grammar skills and improve your writing technique. Then, find some some of many sites available on the web where editors review your work and offer constructive criticism. One such site, Wattpad, gives you the opportunity to post your writing and receive feedback from other authors. Using that feedback to refine your writing lets you improve your skills, in addition to the added benefit of having your name associated with published pieces on the web.
Second: Marketing yourself as a writer
The first step to launching your career as a writer is to publish your writing. By starting a blog or writing articles for hire, you can put your name before companies wanting to hire freelance writers. Create a profile on a writing website such as Helium or Hub Pages, and you can gain credibility as a professional writer. If you are wishing to publish a hard copy of your material, you need an agent. Since you are unlikely to see results from sending your work directly to a publisher, finding an agent to represent you with the publisher is a much better way to get your writing noticed.
